Citizen Sheila
Artists Sheila Halligan-Waltz and Eike Waltz ‘wear their opinions on their sleeves’ in an exhibition which the two have invested a year and a small fortune to produce, without profit in mind, in order to express their growing outrage at democracy they consider betrayed by the Bush Administration. OUT is an exhibition of large-scale oil on canvas paintings of documented or symbolic scenes from the Bush administration by Sheila Halligan-Waltz, and provocative Sculpitti (three-dimensional graffiti: name coined by the artist) sculpture by Eike Waltz. For the month preceding the November elections, the couple rented the cavernous Mill Gallery in Santa Cruz to mount the exhibition which they staffed daily and presented performances and events every weekend—all to engage people in thinking about the cost of the American Dream as proscribed and “defended” by the Bush Administration. |

Sex and City
“Sex as portrayed so explicitly and endlessly in the television and film is usually shown as a ruthless game creating unrealistic expectations and unfulfilled promises,” says Eike. “However, the naked breasts of Papuan village woman are digitally obscured in an educational cable program, and a national network television talk show refused to display a painting by Picasso that just sold in auction for $116 million—at the very least, news—because it exposed a naked breast. This hypocrisy seeps to the local level in confused standards by government “protecting” the public against indecency (defined as that which challenges the moral standards of its citizens vis- à-vis nudity and sexuality). SEX & CITY included nude and erotic art “not to fire up or expose anybody’s hidden lusts or desires, but simply to question how we are programmed and ‘protected.’ |
